What is this blog about?
I have been preparing to facilitate a course for people who are in poverty to help them recognize and develop their resources. The course is called Getting Ahead In a Just-Gettin'-By World or GA for short. It was developed by Phil DeVol by utilizing Ruby Payne, Ph.D's framework for understanding poverty. I anticipate this to be an enriching project for myself and the participants, so I wanted to document and share my experience.

Thirteenth Session
This week the investigators worked as a group to assess community resources. We discussed transportation, housing, employment, education, food, predatory practices and leadership. The investigators concluded that Corpus Christi has the most room for improvement in the areas of transportation (they didn't consider public transportation to be safe), low-income housing (we talked a lot about poor neighborhoods not being safe and landlords who prey upon the poor), and predatory practices (such as payday advance and title loan businesses). I feel proud to say that the resource that's the most secure is community leadership - thanks much in part to the Bridges Out of Poverty program. There are community leaders from various sectors who are involved and I think the investigators are starting to realize that there is so much community support for them and this entire project.
